Risheehat (“home of the saints”) Tea Estate is an old garden just 15 kilometers west of Darjeeling town, but miles away in terms of environment, being sequestered in a microclimate that sustains vibrant fruit orchards and market-oriented flora culture. It is said to be surrounded by organic farms and tea estates and is, itself, certified bio-organic. Although one of Darjeeling’s oldest gardens, Risheehat prides itself with a modern policy of replacement planting with up-to-date  China clones.  The first impression given by this tea is of uniform, delicate wiry leaves, which remind one of a fine grade of China Keemun.  The carefully-made leaves  are an attractive dark brown with lovely reddish brown highlights. The scent is sharp and spicy with a touch of toast and cocoa.  The infusion is brilliant, spicy and floral, reminding this taster of a bouquet of spring Hyacinth flowers.  This Risheehat makes a rich, full, bracing cup with a flowery finish overlaid by a suggestion of peat and retsina wine; a one-of-a-kind tea that should be tried for its most uncommon cup characteristics.
