Second (Summer) Flush Darjeeling Tea
Second Flush Darjeeling Tea harvesting takes place in June, before the monsoon season arrives. Compared to other teas, it has dark color and strong flavor in contrast with first flush Darjeeling. The tea leaves have purplish bloom and tastes fruits, generally! To explain further, tea has amber hue and taste is mostly muscatel grape flavor caused due to the tea plant reacting to small insects that suck juices from the stems.
Flavor of second flush Darjeeling tea is bold and color slightly dark but overall, it has mild taste as compared to often produced black tea. Second flush Darjeeling tea is great for afternoon drink with light snacks. In fact, during the time of British colonialism, it was one of Queen Victoria’s lifelong friends, known as Duchess of Bedford, who initiated the idea of “an afternoon meal of tea, thin sandwiches, and small cakes” to overcome a stinking ‘feeling’.
